The goal of the Bálványos Institute is to carry out research focusing on language rights and language practices, through which we can understand dominant language policy in Romania. In addition, by gathering data on language policy, the Institute can provided support for language rights advocacy organizations too.
Researche in language policy is carried out in the following fields:
- official use of the minority languages – Law No. 215/2001 on public administration and Emergency Ordinance No. 57/2019 replacing it provides important language rights to minorities in Romania, but the implementation of these is not provided systematically by the state
- minority language use in health care system – health care system is considered of strategic importance since patients can explain their problems in their native language
- language practices in everyday life – everyday use of languages, multilingualism and language attitudes are key elements of Romanian language policy.
